Sao Hearn Hkam
Sao Hearn Hkam - The Mahadevi of Yawnghwe - was one of the seven founding members of Burma Watch International.
The story of the Mahadevi's life has been told by Patricia Elliot in
"The White Umbrella". The book's cover says that Sao Hearn Hkam
"has held many titles during her lifetime: Princess, Mahadevi,
First Lady, Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the rebel Shan State
Army's War Council."
The Mahadevi died peacefully on January 17, 2003 at the age of 87 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
In a letter of thanks, the Yawnghwe family was "profoundly moved by the grief and the sense of
loss deeply felt, the love and admiration expressed, by all for the
Mahadevi of Yawnghwe,
and awe-struck by the way the Mahadevi's life, actions, words,
fortitude, courage, and convictions have inspired and strengthened all
those who knew her in person
or have heard or read about her."
Members of Burma Watch have been and continue to be inspired and strengthened
by her involvement. We value the contributions of the Mahadevi to Burma and for the people of Burma.
